Staff Writer Jennifer Burke joined the Catholic Courier in 2003, where she reports on the Finger Lakes region and eastern Monroe County. She previously had interned and freelanced for the paper while earning her bachelor’s degree in journalism from SUNY Brockport.
As a child, Jennifer loved listening to people tell stories. Now, she finds the best part of her job as a reporter is being able to ask people to share their stories with her and, in turn, share those stories with others. Her features on children, young adults and seniors have earned numerous awards from the Catholic Media Association.
In addition to her feature reporting, Jennifer also is especially proud of the stories she writes that help people understand confusing or complicated topics. Her 2021 reporting on the safety and morality of the COVID-19 vaccines earned a second-place Gerard E. Sherry Award for news analysis reporting from the Catholic Media Association and a first-place award for in-depth news/special reporting, with the judges noting, “The piece conveyed scientific explanations in straightforward language and addressed misconceptions about the vaccines.” Jennifer also co-created the Rochester Relics Tour multimedia project which explores saintly relic in the Diocese of Rochester.
Jennifer and her husband, Michael, have four children who keep them on their toes. When she’s not working on a story or volunteering with her kids’ schools or activities, Jennifer enjoys being outdoors, hiking, kayaking and raising monarch butterflies with her family.
