To the editor:
After reading Father Catoir’s recent column "Facts show nation is going wrong way," I was hard pressed to decide whether he was channeling Grover Norquist, John Boehner or Newt Gringrich. (To him,) the country is on a socialist path and we need to cut entitlements or we will all drown in a sea of debt! Not one word about the fact that we began the decade with a budget surplus that was quickly evaporated by the Bush tax cuts. No mention of the Mideast policy wonks that dragged us into two open-ended wars that drain us of blood and treasure to this very day and will do so into the indefinite future. Nor does Father Catoir have the slightest awareness of the investment banks and their exotic instruments of collateralized debt obligations and credit default swaps that pushed the economy over a cliff and with it the well-being of countless citizens. No! No! No! The fault lies with European socialism that caters to the old (Social Security), the sick (Medicare) and the poor (Medicaid); that is our undoing. Please Father, stick to confession and Communion. President Obama will lead us out of this mess as he has been doing despite the unrepentant opposition of the very people who caused the meltdown.
