Three middle-school students from Bishop Kearney in Irondequoit recently received writing awards from the Western New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association, according to information from school officials.
Eighth-grader Caroline Hubbel was awarded first place for excellence in writing, while seventh-graders Jessica Opett and Matthew Tierney earned first and second places, respectively. The students also had earned recognition as part of Monroe County’s Fire Prevention Essay contest.
The Western New York association represents the volunteer fire services in 11 western New York counties: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans, Steuben and Wyoming.
