Students take part in various charitable acts

Catholic-school students and Catholic parish youngsters have been hard at work over the last several weeks on various charitable activities.

* Students, teachers and parents at Our Lady of Mercy High School in Brighton collected and distributed food, clothing, household items, and toys and gifts to 33 area needy families following the school’s annual Golden Mass Dec. 22.

* In December, members of the 11th- and 12th-grade Catholic Youth Organization basketball team at Church of the Transfiguration in Pittsford collected more than 300 used bicycles that were donated to Second Life Bikes in Rochester. The organization will fix the bikes so they can be used by underprivileged children in the city’s northeast section.

* Through a Dec. 4 bake sale at a “Breakfast with Santa” event, students and family members at St. John of Rochester School in Fairport raised $155 for St. Joseph’s Villa of Rochester, which serves at-risk youths. The students also collected school supplies, books, toys, hats, mittens and sporting goods that were donated to Holy Family School in Rochester.
