Gun violence in the United States sadly includes mass shootings at schools, churches and places of business. The Catholic consistent life ethic teaches respect for life at all stages from conception to death. Accordingly, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has called for a total ban on assault weapons, a term that refers commonly to military-style semi-automatic, rifles, shotguns, and pistols fed by ammunition magazines of various capacities. The bishops also support limitations on civilian access to high-capacity ammunition magazines.
