Pope Leo XIV

Born Robert Francis Prevost on Sept. 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, he is the first pope from the United States and the first member of the Order of St. Augustine to serve as pope. He was ordained a priest in 1982 and ministered for many years in Peru, where he became bishop of Chiclayo in 2015.

Before his election to the papacy, he served in the Roman Curia as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops. He chose the name Leo XIV in reference to Pope Leo XIII and the Church’s tradition of Catholic social teaching, particularly as it applies to technological change and artificial intelligence.
