The Catholic Courier is coming to you live!

It’s finally spring! And with springtime comes priest and deacon ordination time, which means the Catholic Courier is gearing up to bring you live coverage of these special liturgies.

As you may know, we’ve been ramping up our live streaming efforts over the past year or so. At first, we used Facebook Live to stream snippets of events. Then we borrowed video equipment from the Diocese of Rochester’s IT department to live stream the entire June 2017 priest ordination.

Since 2017 was chock-full of special events that we wanted to live stream — the diocese’s sesquicentennial Mass, the Catholic Courier Lecture, the National Catholic Youth Conference and the projected completion of the new St. Pius Tenth Church in Chili — we decided to invest in our own equipment.

If you’ve been following our efforts, you know that it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. We’ve run up against connection issues. There have been audio problems. We have experienced frustration, as I’m sure you have! We really appreciate that you’ve stuck with us through our learning curve.

And we hope you’ll notice an improvement in our streams beginning with this year’s deacon ordination. Members of our staff — especially Staff Photographer Jeff Witherow and New Media Coordinator Gina Capellazzi — have been busy working with a consultant who gave us great advice on how to improve and suggested some new equipment.

So, if you can’t attend this year’s ordinations, check out our live coverage on YouTube! The deacon ordination is 10 a.m. May 26, and the priest ordination is 10 a.m. June 2. In addition, we’ll roll out a special ordination multimedia project the week of June 3 featuring photos and videos from each liturgy and recordings of the live streams.

And thanks for continuing to tune in!
