The key to success

Education is the key.

We hear that phrase over and over in current discussions about eradicating poverty and in this current season of high-school and college graduations. I’ve talked about it in sharing my personal story from growing up poor to becoming the first in my family to graduate from college.

And that graduation was only made possible because of a full-tuition scholarship from Utica College.

So, all the donors, organizations, and area colleges and universities that provided scholarships during last weekend’s Ibero-American Action League’s 20th-annual Hispanic Scholarship Recognition Awards gala should be applauded for their efforts to help improve the lives of Latino students in the Rochester area. El Mensajero Católico/Catholic Courier also has been part of those efforts since 2011.

By giving 61 Latino students a hand up, the goal is to put them on that road to success. Only a third of those students graduated from the Rochester City School District, however, and I hope that percentage increases in coming years. And I’m sure I’m not alone in that hope.

But as many of the speakers during the gala noted, success in higher education and career won’t come without hard work and determination. The students who were recognized on July 11 will attend such great universities as Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Notre Dame, Rochester Institute of Technology and the University of Rochester. So when they go on to accomplish great things in their careers, they also will have a responsibility to pay it forward.

As a common biblical refrain reminds us all: "Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more." (Luke 12:48)

I congratulate all the students and look forward to the great leadership they will provide someday. Rochester is counting on them.
