The pope on his birthday

If you’ve been following the news from Europe you know that this has been a very intense and difficult time for our church there. The challenges that the Catholic Church in the U.S. has faced since the sex-abuse crisis exploded in 2002 are being felt around the world. It is heartbreaking to know that there are more victims who are still trying to come to some healing. In the U.S., there have been great strides made in creating a safe environment for children in our churches, strides that now provide programs that lead in education and addressing issues of abuse. The reality of abuse in our church, and in our society, is a call to conversion for us. But there is hope that in our ongoing conversion we can be transformed individually and communally to be a better witness to the love and grace of our Lord.

Much needs to be done still, here and around the world. Our leaders must be a part of this transformation and need our prayers, our challenges and our dedication so that we may all become the people God wants us to be. Today is Pope Benedict’s birthday. Please take a moment to pray for him and for all of those in leadership, that they may have the courage and strength to be agents of transformation.
