The story behind the ‘Catholic Courier’s’ first podcast

Over the last few years, the staff at the Catholic Courier has talked about starting a podcast.

I began attending podcast webinars, and two of my friends and I started a podcast on figure skating. But I was having a difficult time figuring out what the Courier’s inaugural podcast should be.

That is until I learned that we would celebrate the Courier’s 135th anniversary with a special photo exhibit. Eureka! A special limited-series podcast with past and present Courier photographers.

I pitched my idea in early spring, and my first task was finding a cohost. I asked Rebecca Leclair, who is on our board of directors. Rebecca was a news anchor at News10NBC in Rochester, where I worked as a producer for eight years before coming to the Courier. Rebecca agreed to join me, and working with her has brought back a lot of memories of when we previously worked together.

The next task was tracking down the photographers, which was a bit of a challenge. Thankfully, after messaging through email and social media, I was able to track down a handful of past photographers interested in participating.

In late summer, we began scheduling our recordings, and I was excited to use our new studio for some of them.

But then the unexpected happened.

I came down with COVID, which meant we had to move recordings from in person to Zoom. It wasn’t what I had planned, but as they say in show business, “The show must go on.” And, thanks to technology, we were able to keep our recording schedule intact.

Now as I finish editing episodes, I’m excited for people to hear our first episode and to check out our photo exhibit this October.
