The wonderful world of Catholic apps

There is an endless amount of information on the Internet, some good, some bad, and so it is with the wonderful world of phone apps — you can find just about anything. With so many people having smartphones/devices these days, I thought I would share what I’ve found most popular among Catholic apps. Most of these are available primarily for iPhone/iPad due to their much larger app market, but similar apps can be found for Android phones/devices.

  • iMissal: Includes Mass readings, liturgical calendar, lectionary, three different Bible translations, prayers and even Mass videos. Also available on Android phones. ($4.99)
  • Catholic Calendar: Liturgical calendar for every year from 1970 to 2300 and beyond. (Free)
  • VerseWise Bible (Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition): The Catholic Bible at your fingertips. You can select verses and e-mail them or post to Facebook. The app allows you to easily navigate, search and bookmark Scripture. ($6.99)
  • Recordatio: Features all the encyclicals of the last 50 years. ($1.99)
  • Answers 4 Catholics: Hundreds of Bible verses and quotes with apologetic notes, news and blog streams. Reviewers have commented on how useful it is for learning about faith and getting quick answers to questions. ($1.99)

EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the first part of a two-part series on Catholic apps. Stay tuned for part 2 on May 5.

iPieta: Access to Catholic documents, teachings, writings, prayers and calendars for use at home, on the go, on the spot apologetics, etc. Also available in Spanish. ($2.99)
