Tier Catholic Charities agency hosts clothing, supply giveaways

Catholic Charities is offering a clothing giveaway in Elmira as well as a giveaway for new school supplies, backpacks and headphones in Chemung and Schuyler counties.

The Samaritan Center, 380 S. Main St., Elmira, will host a clothing giveaway Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (rain date of Aug. 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Individuals receiving clothes for their families should bring their own bags, wear masks and practice social distancing.

Suzi Fritz, director of emergency services for Catholic Charities of Chemung/Schuyler, noted that the Samaritan Center’s clothing closet has been closed to the public since the start of the coronavirus pandemic and will remain closed for the time being after the Aug. 20 giveaway. Drop-off donations are not being accepted. Any businesses looking to make donations of new items should call 607-734-9784, ext. 2133, or email Katie.Rhodes@dor.org.

Meanwhile, new school supplies, backpacks and headphones are being collected through Aug. 24 by area businesses, Catholic Charities and the Economic Opportunity Program. Those items will be distributed at back-to-school kickoff events taking place Aug. 28 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Schuyler County Highway Department, 910 S. Decatur St., Watkins Glen; and Sept. 2 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Elmira Community Kitchen, 160 High St., Elmira. These free events will be walk-up or drive-through. Both require pre-registration by Aug. 24 at noon. Registration is available at cs-cc.org. Call 607-734-4898 with questions for the Chemung event and 607-535-2050 for the Schuyler event. Monetary donations can be made online.

The following businesses are offering drop-off locations: Empower Federal Credit Union, Elmira; Ferrario Ford, Horseheads; Mr. Panosian’s Famous Shoes, Elmira; Parmenter Tire, Auto and Truck Service, Horseheads; SPCA, Elmira; Purple Iris Boutique, Horseheads; Treu Office Supply and Furniture, Elmira; Chemung Canal Trust Company, Montour Falls and Watkins Glen; Famous Brands, Watkins Glen; Parmenter Tire, Auto & Truck Service, Odessa and Montour Falls; Quinlan’s Pharmacy, Montour Falls; and The Hi-Lites, Watkins Glen. Donations also will be accepted at the Samaritan Center, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to noon; Schuyler Outreach Food Pantry, 112 10th St., Watkins Glen, Tuesday and Friday, 9 a.m to 2 p.m., and Thursday, noon to 4 p.m.; and EOP, 650 Baldwin St., Elmira, Monday through Thursday, 8:15 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.
