Tioga pastor now priest of Rochester Diocese

In an April 15 memo to diocesan priests, deacons and pastoral administrators, Bishop Salvatore R. Matano announced that Father Jeffrey R. Galens, pastor of Blessed Trinity and St. Patrick parishes in Owego, was incardinated April 12, 2024, as a priest of the Diocese of Rochester.

A native of Clifton Springs, Father Galens was ordained May 12, 1990, by the late Cardinal John O’Connor as a priest of the Archdiocese of New York.

After nearly two decades of service in the archdiocese, he asked in 2019 to serve as a fidei donum (missionary) priest in his home diocese. He has been pastor of the two Tioga County parishes since Aug. 1 of that year and serves as dean of the diocese’s South Deanery.

On Feb. 15 of this year, Father Galens asked to be incardinated into the Diocese of Rochester. Following protocols and positive local consultations, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York, issued a decree of excardination, and Bishop Matano issued a decree of incardination.

In his memo, Bishop Matano noted that “the Diocese of Rochester is grateful to Father Galens for his missionary zeal exhibited in his willingness to continue to serve in the Diocese of Rochester. I also am genuinely appreciative to the Archdiocese of New York and especially to Cardinal Dolan for his consideration, understanding and solicitude in this matter.”

Bishop Matano’s memo requested prayers asking God to bless Father Galens’ priestly ministry and “that the Lord will bless our Diocese with more vocations to the sacred priesthood …”
