Individual indoor track titles were in abundance this winter among Catholic high schools in the diocese.
The Aquinas Institute boys won six events en route to a second-place team finish in the Section 5 Class C meet held Feb. 18. First-place finishers were Alonzo Turney in the 55-meter dash and long jump, Josh Hanna in the 300 and 600 runs, the 800 relay and the 1,600 relay.
Also faring well in Section 5 Class C were the Little Irish girls, who earned fourth place as a team on the strength of event winners Camaria Long, 55 and 300 meters; Amber Thomas, triple jump; and the 800 relay. Long then won the 300 at the state-qualifying meet on Feb. 24.
Our Lady of Mercy track earned a third-place showing in Section 5 Class B as Maggie Pryslak won the 600, Sarah Bronk took the pole vault, Kierra Carter claimed the shot put and the 1,600 relay placed first as well. Pryslak went on to win the state qualifier in the 600.
McQuaid Jesuit winners in Section 5 Class A were Nick Rauscher in the 3,200 and Ronald Morrow in the 55 hurdles. Rauscher and Morrow then repeated those first-place finishes at the state qualifier.
Elmira Notre Dame’s Brittany Schutrum won the 55 and 300 meters in the Section 4 Division 2 championships on Feb. 3, helping the Crusaders place fourth in team scoring.
* McQuaid Jesuit won the Section 5 Class A boys’ Alpine skiing title on Feb. 11 as the Knights’ Seery Donnan (second place), Max Sertl (third), Gardner Webber (sixth) and Nick Sertl (eighth) all logged top-10 finishes in the giant slalom, and Webber, Max Sertl and Nick Sertl went 6-7-8 in the slalom.
* Our Lady of Mercy boasted an individual Alpine champion in Ingrid Donnan, who won the slalom on Feb. 12.
* Geneva DeSales won the Section 5 Class D2 cheerleading title on Feb. 25. The Saints scored 314 points to best second-place C.G. Finney (296).
* DeSales’ D.J. Deal reached the final of the Section 5 Class B wrestling tournament on Feb. 4. Deal was competing in the 132-pound division.
