Traveling troupe of Christian teens to perform at Victor parish

St. Patrick Parish in Victor will host two shows under the big top July 14.

No, the circus isn’t coming to town, but the circus tent is.

A group of Maryland high-school students — collectively known as Tent Troupe — currently is touring the country and performing family-friendly, Christian-themed shows under circus tents. The Victor parish, located at 115 Maple Ave., is one of the stops on the troupe’s summer tour, said Lori Cunliffe, St. Patrick’s youth and parish-life coordinator.

“They are an extremely talented group of Christian teens that tour … each summer,” Cunliffe said. “They run a very organized group.”

The Victor parish is one of 12 stops on Tent Troupe’s schedule this month. After spending much of June and early July in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Ohio, Tent Troupe will perform a show in Alden, Erie County, on July 11 before heading east to Victor.

Tent Troupe, now in its 38th year, is a mission of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Silver Spring, Md. At each tour stop the teens, supported by adults and college students, perform a children’s matinee featuring classic short stories, fables and folk tales. This matinee includes adaptations of such classics as Grimm Brothers’ The Bremen Town Musicians and more modern stories, such as Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree. The troupe’s performers help audience members unearth the up-to-date messages hidden in these stories through drama, song and dance.

“They are engaging and interact with the audience quite a bit. They visit with the audience afterward and are just great kids,” Cunliffe said.

The matinee is followed by an evening performance of “The Curious Savage,” a comedy in which an elderly woman who has suddenly become a millionaire tries to escape from a world motivated by greed and dishonesty and instead seeks out kind, affectionate and virtuous people.

The children’s matinee will begin at 1:45 p.m., and the evening performance of “The Curious Savage” will begin at 7:45 p.m. No admission will be charged for either show, but a free-will offering will be taken at intermissions.
