Excellus BlueCross BlueShield recently awarded grants to 13 nonprofit organizations in the Rochester region. Two of the recipients — Family Promise of Ontario County Inc and Bishop Sheen Ecumenical Housing Foundation — have ties to local Catholic institutions.

Community Health Awards are given to programs that seek to improve the health or healthcare of specific populations within the Rochester region

Family Promise of Ontario County will use the grant for its Bridges for Hope program, which provides homeless families with safe, secure and supervised temporary lodging while also helping the families to overcome obstacles preventing them from acquiring permanent, independent housing. The organization’s community partners include St. Benedict Parish in Canandaigua and East Bloomfield, St. Patrick Parish inVictor, Our Lady of Peace Parish inGeneva, and St. Peter Parish in Shortsville, Phelps and Clifton Springs, all in Ontario County

Bishop Sheen Ecumenical Housing Foundation, an affiliate of the Diocese of Rochester, will use the funds for the rehabilitation of homes for modest-income families and seniors to eliminate health and safety hazards. These efforts are aimed at reducing the frequency of medical emergencies, injuries and hospital stays among the seniors and families.
