On Jan. 10 Bishop Matthew H. Clark signed a decree amalgamating Geneva’s St. Stephen and St. Francis de Sales parishes into a single new parish, named Our Lady of Peace Parish.
The steps required by church law for becoming a single parish are now complete, but the parish cannot start using its new name until it has completed the remaining steps necessary to become a corporation under civil law. Parish officials hope these steps will be completed by July 1.
The name was chosen by parishioners, receiving 110 of the 515 votes cast in November for 22 different choices, according to Father Roy Kiggins, pastor. The parish plans to keep both church buildings open as long as there are enough parishioners and money to operate them both, he wrote in a Jan. 28 bulletin column.
