The following School Sisters of Notre Dame are celebrating their jubilees in 2022.
75 Years
Sister Mariella McMillan was born in Brooklyn, and she attended the St. Alphonsus School where the School Sisters of Notre Dame taught. Sister McMillan earned her bachelor of science degree in education from Seton Hall University. She began teaching in 1947 at St. Mary’s in Washington, D.C., and also taught at St. Vincent’s Orphanage in Tacony, Pa., and Immaculate Conception in Secaucus, N.J. She arrived to Rochester in 1971 and taught elementary students at Holy Ghost, Gates, and St. Phillip Neri, Rochester, where she served as a reading specialist from 1974-89. She then also taught at St. Ambrose and St. Boniface in Rochester until 1999 when she moved into community and parish service at St. Philip Neri until its closing in 2003. She continued the ministry of community and parish service at St. Cecilia in Irondequoit until 2021. Sister McMillan now enjoys serving in prayer and presence at the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse in Pittsford.
70 Years
Sister Lorraine Burns (formerly Sister Mary Ronald) began teaching as a candidate in Baltimore in 1949. After her novitiate, she was missioned to Irvington, N.J., where she taught at St. Leo’s Elementary School and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Seton Hall University. In 1961, she moved to Rochester, where she taught at Holy Family and St. Joseph’s Business School. In 1968, she became superior and principal at St. Boniface in Rochester. In 1973, she left for Liberia, West Africa, where she taught in the Bush. In 1977, she returned to the United States to become principal in Watertown, Conn. She returned to Rochester in 1986 to become principal at Holy Family School. In 2003, she became the director of the Notre Dame Learning Center, which provides specialized tutoring to Rochester’s children. After retiring from the center, she worked for Comfort Keepers as a senior companion. Today, she enjoys her retirement by keeping her finger on the pulse of Notre Dame Learning Center.
