What does bowling have to do with typing on a computer, smart phone or tablet?
Both provide ways to donate to the annual Catholic Courier/Catholic Charities Christmas Appeal, which provides relief to families and individuals facing short-term financial crises.
On Dec. 2 the Christmas Appeal will participate in the fourth-annual ROC the Day campaign, and on Feb. 7 the appeal’s fourth-annual Bowl-A-Thon will be held at L&M Lanes, located at 837 Merchants Road in Rochester.
ROC the Day is a 24-hour-long campaign that makes it easy for individuals to make online donations to their favorite nonprofit organizations in the Rochester area. Prospective donors visit www.ROCtheday.org any time Dec. 2 and search for their favorite charities. With just a few clicks of the mouse or taps on a touchscreen, they can make their donations right there on the website’s secure online-giving platform.
Anyone interested in donating to the Christmas Appeal may search for the appeal among the list of participating nonprofits or head straight to www.ROCtheday.org/CatholicCourierCatholicCharitiesChristmasAppeal. In 2013, donors contributed a total of $950.40 during the ROC the Day campaign, noted Donna Stubbings, appeal coordinator and circulation manager for the Catholic Courier and El Mensajero Católico newspapers.
The Christmas Appeal’s annual bowl-a-thon provides a fun and active way for donors to contribute to the campaign. Last year bowlers raised $402 for the appeal, Stubbings said, and organizers hope this year’s event on Feb. 7 will be even more successful. Bowlers may sign up for either the noon or 2:30 p.m. time slots by contacting Sam Oldenburg at 585-328-3228, ext. 1510, or e-mailing him at email@example.com. The bowl-a-thon’s $20 per-person registration fee includes three games, shoe rental and pizza. Bowlers are welcome to solicit pledges from sponsors and donate those funds to the appeal. This is not required, but the Christmas Appeal’s organizers will award a prize to the parish youth group that raises the most money for the appeal.
Those who are unable to participate in these two initiatives may contribute to the Christmas Appeal by mail through the end of February. Checks should be made payable to Christmas Appeal and sent to the Catholic Courier, PO Box 24379, Rochester, NY 14624. Please include your name, address, city, state, ZIP code, telephone number, and whether the gift is being made in honor or in memory of someone.
