There will be several local opportunities for those who would like to gather with others to reflect and pray for those affected by the Dec. 14 tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
* There will be a candlelight Prayer for Peace on Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. at St. Agnes Church, 108 Prospect St. in Avon. All are invited to come and pray through song, silence, word and intention. For more information, contact the parish office at 585-226-2100.
* A candlelight vigil will be held on Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. at Pulteney Park, located at Washington and South Main streets in Geneva. Jeanette Hernandez, a teacher at St. Francis-St. Stephen School, is planning the vigil with the help of several other individuals, including a bereavement counselor from BRIDGES Bereavement Support Services. The vigil will feature readings, prayers and music. Hernandez is encouraging each participant to bring a regular candle to light during the vigil as well as a birthday candle to represent the lost, unrealized birthdays of the people who died in Newtown. When these birthday candles are lit, there will be a moment of silence for participants to pray and wish.
"We will wish for the children surviving the tragedy, for instance, that their nightmares go away," Hernandez explained.
