Visit to Africa listed among pope’s upcoming events

Before the Vatican released a detailed schedule of Pope Francis’ first trip to Africa, the office of papal liturgical ceremonies included the Nov. 25-30 visit on its list of upcoming papal events.

The pope’s liturgical schedule, released at the Vatican Oct. 12, includes mention of the "apostolic visit to Kenya, Uganda and the Central African Republic" at the end of November.

Also on the calendar:

— Mass Oct. 18 in St. Peter’s Square for the canonization of Louis and Marie Zelie Guerin Martin, the parents of St. Therese of Lisieux; Italian Father Vincenzo Grossi, founder of the Institute of the Daughters of the Oratory: and Spanish Sister Maria of the Immaculate Conception, a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Company of the Cross.

— Mass Oct. 25 in St. Peter’s Basilica for the closing of the Synod of Bishops on the family.

— On Nov. 1, the feast of All Saints, Mass in Rome’s Verano Cemetery.

— Private prayer for deceased popes Nov. 2, the feast of All Souls, in the grotto of St. Peter’s Basilica, where many popes are buried.

— Memorial Mass Nov. 3 in St. Peter’s Basilica for bishops and cardinals who have died in the past year.

— Nov. 9, the feast of the dedication of the Basilica of St. John Lateran, Pope Francis will celebrate Mass in the basilica and ordain bishops.

— A pastoral visit to Florence Nov. 10.

— A visit Nov. 15 to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rome.
