A longtime tradition for the fourth-grade students at Elmira’s Holy Family School is their annual visit to Browntown School, a well preserved one-room schoolhouse just a few miles away. This year, on March 7, students dressed in the clothing styles of their great, great grandparents and spent the day in an atmosphere of living history. They felt the warmth of a century old potbelly stove as they studied from reproduction textbooks from the late 1890s and wrote on old slate chalkboards.
