Faith In Action, a program operated by Livingston County Catholic Charities, and the ecumenical Livingston County Coalition of Churches are hosting a “Weekend of Caring: Neighbors Helping Neighbors” walk-a-thon on Saturday, Oct. 1.
All proceeds raised will benefit the Faith in Action program, which helps seniors and those with disabilities remain living at home for as long as possible. The walk-a-thon, sponsored by Wal-Mart, will begin with registration from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Village Log Cabin Park on the corner of Route 20A and Main Street in Geneseo. The walk will then take place from 10 a.m. to noon and will include a three-mile tour of the village and its historic sites. The walk-a-thon will end with a concert featuring The Power Company and Mochester at noon as well as a lunch.
Faith In Action pairs volunteers with “care recipients,” generally people in their 80s and 90s living at home, according to Christa Barrows, Faith In Action coordinator. Barrows said Faith In Action has 49 volunteers currently serving people. She added that Faith In Action is seeking volunteers who are willing to drive seniors to medical appointments once a month.
Faith In Action is also asking area churches to express support for the Weekend of Caring on Oct. 2 by such activities as holding bake sales, rummage sales or other special events to raise money for Faith In Action; recruit congregation members to volunteer for Faith In Action; and refer people in need to the program.
