Wayne County Community Endowment awards over $60,000 to nonprofits

SODUS — Rochester Area Community Foundation and the Wayne County Community Endowment Advisory Committee have awarded $36,405 in grants to 10 nonprofit organizations and an additional $25,000 in grants to 22 food pantries serving the Wayne County community.

The grant checks were presented to representatives of the organizations at a reception on December 12 at the Reliant Community Credit Union in Sodus.

The following organizations received grants:
American Red Cross, Wayne County Chapter: The Reconnection Workshop series helps to ease the homecoming transitions of service members and their families by recognizing the individual’s and family’s specific needs. $5,000

Catholic Charities of Wayne County: To support the College Bound program, which provides help for youth who lack home support to compete the college application and financial aid processes. $3,500

Catholic Charities of Wayne County: To support operations of the community clothing center. $1,500

Galen Historical Society: To support an educational community experience, including a songwriters’ workshop series to develop and record songs that will be incorporated into a community-led play depicting Abraham Lincoln’s 1861 stop in Clyde, his Gettysburg address, and his death. $3,605

Home Meal Service: To support the staff, mileage reimbursement, and occupancy costs at the Sodus nutrition site and for the Meals on Wheels program. $600

Literacy Volunteers: To support a program that aims to increase family literacy capacity in Wayne County. $5,000

Wayne Arc: To purchase iPads to be used as assistive technology tools by children with autism at the Roosevelt Children’s Center. $5,000

Wayne County Rural Ministry: To support emergency assistance to individuals and families through the Heat/Rent Program. $5,000

Wayne Pretrial Services: To support the Drop-in GED program that provides students with G.E.D. tutoring and test preparation. $5,000

Williamson Free Public Library: To support creation of an innovative technology learning and training space for community use. $2,700

The following food pantries that serve Wayne County residents received a grant ranging
from $750 to $2,000:

  • Fairville Food Pantry in Newark
  • God’s Store House in Williamson
  • Lyons Community Food Pantry
  • Newark Food Closet
  • North Rose Food Pantry
  • Ontario Food Pantry
  • Pal-Mac Food Pantry, Inc.
  • Red Creek Community Food Cupboard
  • Rose Emergency Food Pantry
  • Savannah Community Food Pantry
  • Sodus Point United Methodist Church Food Pantry
  • St. John’s Food Pantry in Clyde
  • Success Center in Sodus
  • Tyre Food Pantry in Seneca Falls
  • Walworth Food Pantry
  • Wolcott Food Pantry

The Wayne County Community Endowment is a permanent endowment fund started in 1984 with charitable gifts from the estate of Nettie Bullis, a lifelong resident of Wayne County who believed strongly in her community, education and projects that improve the quality of life. This fund and other funds that benefit Wayne County were established at Rochester Area Community Foundation.

Since 2002, Wayne County Community Endowment funds have awarded more than $500,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations help people in Wayne County. For more information on the Community Foundation or the Wayne County Community Endowment Fund call (585) 341-4357.
