What is the World Mission Rosary?

In 1951, while serving as the National Director for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen designed the World Mission Rosary. Each decade of the World Mission Rosary is a different color and represents a different area of the world where missionaries continue to share the good news of Jesus, explained Sister Paul, a member of the Discalced Carmelites of Rochester.

There are five colors:

  • Green represents the forest and grasslands of Africa.
  • Blue is for the ocean surrounding the islands of the Pacific Ocean.
  • White symbolizes Europe, home of the Holy Father.
  • Red shows the fire of faith brought to the first missionaries of America.
  • Yellow is for the morning light of the East, symbolizing Asia.
