Gloria B. Misnick was awarded the Order of St. Agnes Medal and Award on Aug. 13 in recognition for her humanitarianism and service to God, country and home.
She represented the Feshoh-Macekur Post 1178, Elmira Heights, at the Catholic War Veterans & Auxiliary National Convention held Aug. 7-14 in Portland, Maine. She is the first auxiliary member from Post 1178 to receive this honor.
Father Robert Batcho, pastor at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Elmira Heights where Misnick is a parishioner, nominated her for the award. Her resume was signed by auxiliary president Yolanda Howell, and a letter of recommendation was written by Donald Narde, commander of the local Catholic War Veterans association.
Bishop Richard Higgins, who serves as bishop protector for the Catholic War Veterans of America, presented Misnick with the medal and award. This honor is dedicated to St. Agnes, a Roman virgin-martyr who died in 304 at the age of 12 or 13 for refusing to marry due to her strong Christian beliefs.
