Workshop slated on contemplative prayer

A centering-prayer workshop will be held Saturday, Oct. 28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cobblestone Springs in Dundee.

Centering, or contemplative, prayer is a silent form of deepening one’s relationship with God while supporting those who are gathered. Facilitators of the Oct. 28 workshop will be Father Philip Billotte and Deacon George Welch. For details, contact Deacon Welch at 607/733-6541, ext. 425, or Cobblestone Springs at 607/243-8212.

In addition, contemplative prayer is held regularly in the chapel of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elmira, where Deacon Welch serves as chaplain. Gatherings take place every first and third Wednesday of the month at 6:15 p.m. The next meeting will be Nov. 1.

“The whole idea of contemplative prayer is ancient. It goes right back to the beginning of the church,” Deacon Welch said in a 2004 Catholic Courier Weekly story. He likened contemplative prayer to Biblical examples of Jesus pulling away from the crowd to pray with just a few disciples nearby, such as during the Transfiguration and at the Garden of Gethsemane.
