    Eight students at Siena Catholic Academy in Brighton recently volunteered to have their hair shortened for a good cause. The hair will be given to Locks of Love, which provides hair pieces to children suffering from medical hair loss, and to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, a partnership with the American Cancer Society that benefits women battling cancer. Click here to view more photos from this event and/or buy prints.

    Prekindergarten through second-grade students at St. Joseph School in Auburn got to meet Santa Claus and indulge in some Christmas treats during a Dec. 14 "Breakfast with Santa" in the school cafeteria. Each child had a chance to sit on Santa's lap and got doughnuts and a candy cane. Students also posed for a group photo with Santa, and two of the classes sang Christmas carols to him.

    Students at St. Joseph School in Penfield were in the holiday spirit this week as they worked on several Thanksgiving projects. On Monday preschool students took part in a Thanksgiving story time and craft session; kindergartners dressed as pilgrims and Native Americans for a special feast; and second-graders made 16 pies to be donated to Open Door Mission. On Tuesday prekindergarten students dressed as Native Americans and heard Thanksgiving stories, and fifth-graders collected and organized food items for Thanksgiving baskets that were given to needy families. The Catholic Courier spoke to some of the kindergartners and second-graders about what they were most thankful for.

    St. Ann's Community, a senior-care provider, held a special Veterans Day service at St. Ann's Chapel in Irondequoit Nov. 8. Among the veterans in attendance was St. Ann's resident Sam Calabrese, who served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was at sea headed for Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked. Calabrese shared his story with the Catholic Courier.

    Inspired by the national Nuns on the Bus movement begun in Washington, D.C., local women religious boarded two buses Oct. 16 and, joined by dozens of supporters, embarked on a tour of social-ministry sites throughout Rochester. The daylong tour, which was organized by the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Sisters of Mercy and Sisters of St. Joseph, stopped at St. Joseph's House of Hospitality, St. Michael Church, Bethany House and St. Charles Settlement House, among other locations. Organizers sought to draw attention to how possible federal budget cuts could affect the poorest and most vulnerable people in our community.
