Nazareth Academy to play in state basketball Final Four

Nazareth Academy took a big step over the weekend in its quest for the school’s first state girls’ basketball title.
The Lasers have reached the state Final Four, thanks to a 67-54 victory over Olean on Sunday, March 9. The Class B quarterfinal game was played at Finger Lakes Community College in Hopewell.
A balanced scoring attack saw Nazareth put four players in double figures. Nicole Jones led the way with 18 points and also compiled eight rebounds and five blocked shots. She was followed by Courtney Green with 13 points, Porsche Gavin with 12 and Megan Morrell with 11. Nazareth led Olean, a Section 6 school, at every quarter break: 19-14, 37-30 and 51-40.
Nazareth, one of the most dominant programs in all of Section 5 over the past decade, improved its record to 22-2 in advancing to the state Class B semifinals. The Lasers’ next game will be against Hoosick Valley of Section 2 on Friday, March 14, at 11:45 a.m. at Hudson Valley Community College. The winner will move on to the next day’s 4 p.m. championship game, also at Hudson Valley, against either Seton Catholic of Section 4 or Briarcliff or Section 1.
