Several parishes in Monroe County will offer events during the Season of Creation, an ecumenical celebration that spans five weeks between the Sept. 1 World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation and the Oct. 4 feast day of St. Francis of Assisi.
St. Theodore Church in Gates will hold two events during the Season of Creation.
Father David Tedesche, pastor, will celebrate a Mass for Creation at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 1, at the church, 168 Spencerport Road in Gates. He also will lead a Season of Creation Prayer service at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 13 on the shore of Lake Ontario at Braddock Bay Marina, 105 E. Manitou Drive. In the event of rain, the service will be at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 27.
Faith communities around the Rochester area will be gathering at watch parties at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 29 to hear noted environmentalist Bill McKibben speak on “Faithful Resistance in a Warming World: Climate, Courage, and Collective Action.” Rochester Area Interfaith Climate Action is working with Chicago-based Faith in Place to offer two days of speakers culminating in gatherings where attendees can listen to McKibben’s talk together and discuss how our faith calls us to respond to the climate crisis. Church of the Transfiguration in Pittsford and the Southeast Rochester Catholic Community will each host a session. St. Joseph/Holy Spirit parishes’ The Creation Care Team from St. Joseph, Penfield, and Holy Spirit, Weber, will be joining the watch party at Temple Sinai in Rochester. Rochester’s St. Monica Church will host “Prayers for All Creation” from 2 to 3 p.m. Oct. 4 along the Genesee River behind the Staybridge Suites Hotel, corner of Brooks Avenue and Genesee Street. Participants should park behind Brooks Landing on the opposite corner from the hotel. This special ecumenical service on the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi will follow the theme of “Living Water” and feature prayers, Scripture reading and singing. The event is free.
